Usb installation failed with status -2102

Postby bugmenotplease » 03 Feb 2014, 07:02

Hey!

Recently I downloaded latest .iso and installer for Windows and bumped into this trouble. I did everything according to recomendations but I get same error on different PCs.

Full error code is next: Usb installation failed with status -2102: Cannot rename M:\isolinux to M:\syslinux

How do I solve this?

I would give http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ a try. I use that regularly to install SYSRESCCD on USB media.

I had to move the ISO from the 'users' 'downloads' directory in Windows 7 (UAC on) to the c:\temp\ folder for this to work.

I also ran the installer as admin (again UAC is on).

Also: http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_How_to_install_SystemRescueCd_on_an_USB-stick

is missing a step: you need to hit the 'Extract files' button in the systemrescuecd installer GUI.

edit: hmm actually I still get the "USB installation failed with status -2102: Cannot rename I:\isolinux to I:\syslinux

I ended up doing the "Alternative USB installation method from the CD-ROM":

burning live CD from ISO via IMGburn
changing boot order in my BIOS
booting from live CD (standard boot options)
running 'sysresccd-usbstick dialog' from CLI
using spacebar to select plugged in USB stick and hitting enter
shutdown now -hP <-- to power down computer
powerbutton to reboot computer and quickly ejecting CD to prevent booting to live CD
verified files look correct on USB stick in Windows explorer

It seems that the commands still either fall pre to dos limitations or perhaps truncated directory/file names confuse the scripting.
Place both the work directory and the root directory (including the .iso and the .exe) in directories that are less than 8 characters. no spaces or punctuation
I used C:/temp (iso and exe) and D:/temp (work directory) .. extract and run.. from the desk top it error out with the -2102 changing the locations to a simple name off the root of the drive(s) it works like a charm..

Save you some headache.. hope it helps..

- hit the 'Extract files' button in the systemrescuecd installer GUI.
- run the installer as administrator
- Place both the work directory and the root directory (including the .iso and the .exe) in directories that are less than 8 characters. no spaces or punctuation

One of those helped for me. Otherwise I got the same -2012 error.

I placed and renamed the files to d:\inst.exe d:\src441.iso and d:\t as work dir

the source of evil here i think is how the path looks like. when i pick a folder as work directory it looks like C:\folder/ (mind the different slash types).
so when i use C:\ as work dir and copy the .iso to C:\) it works as it has no back slash.
however i had another error Code 2107. this installation tool needs fixing.

The problem is you need to hit "Extract files" before installation.

This step is simply missing the docs.
