sys-apps/renameutils and app-text/convmv

app-text/convmv is a simple way to fix the encoding of the filenames (not the file contents, but the file name). Have you ever tried working with files that contains non-ASCII characters? Well, if you are from any country that speaks a language other than English, then yes. Then how about moving, copying or backing up files from one partition to another? Or through a samba share? Or using rsync? Then, sometimes the partition is mounted with files as UTF-8, but the filenames are actually in another encoding, leading to several errors down the line. convmv can help with that. It is also very small (60KiB).

sys-apps/renameutils is a great way to interactively rename a single file or to quickly copy or move multiple files through a text editor. It provides tools such as imv or icp, that receive a single parameter (the filename) and opens a readline prompt to interactively edit the filename. And also qmv and qcp, that receive a (possibly large) list of files and opens your preferred text editor. Then you just edit the destination filenames, save and quit the editor, and the tool will move/copy all those files. The tool is smart enough to correctly handle cyclic renames, and to detect errors. It is 468KiB installed, and extremely useful.
