sys-apps/duc and sys-fs/ncdu - disk usage tools [solved]

Postby denilsonsa » 25 Aug 2016, 11:27

ncdu is a tiny tool using ncurses to quickly visualize and navigate the file/directory usage. It is small and extremely helpful.

duc has a similar purpose, but is a bit more complicated. It is the sucessor of philesight. It works by first indexing the files, and then it has several UIs to view the indexed database: command-line, ncurses, X11, and even a CGI backend. To enable the X11 GUI, you need USE="X cairo gui". You may also want to throw in the "sqlite" flag.

Given that managing files and maybe deleting stuff to free up some space is something that I do when using a system rescue disk, I believe both tools are useful. If you don't want to include both, at least include ncdu.

Hello,

I also think that ncdu should be included. It's a very useful tool to quickly resolve out of inode/space situations.
