This is to second the above request.
GSmartControl is a convenient Graphical User Interface to control the SmartMonTools utility. It would be a useful complement to SmartMonTools (which is already included in SystemRescueCd).
The GUI is especially useful when running a

Code: Select all

smartctl --test=long
which takes more than an hour to complete on large capacity hard drives. In the absence of GSmartControl, one has to pool manually and periodically the hard drive with a

Code: Select all

smartctl --capabilities /dev/hda
command to follow the progress of the test.
With GSmartControl the progress of such test is conveniently displayed in graphical form and automatically updated as it is performed.
Other SmartMonTools operations also benefit from the GSmartControl GUI.

Hopefully GSmartControl will be considered for inclusion in future releases of SystemRescueCd.

while gsmartcontrol looks eye candy to gui users, remember that most sysrcd users are experienced admins who prefer the command line. every tool which duplicates functionality and comes with larger package size should be avoided, imho....

Good point. But I think that a rescue CD should cater to as many walks of life as possible. The priority should be to get people out of pickles, not appease to specific groups.

We still have both parted & gparted here, so why not to include gsmartcontrol in addition to smartmontools? :)

I agree: gsmartcontrol would be a nice addition to sysresccd! Any plans on adding it?

I agree with the above
gsmartcontrol should be added in SystemRescueCD. I will extend it's usefulness.

Ithere is also the way of personalizing SystemRescueCd, based on:
https://www.system-rescue-cd.org/Sysres ... emRescueCd

That's what I tried to do.
1- followed the documentation's steps
...
2- downloaded and and extracted a recent portage snapshot
3- I checked what other packages are needed in order to compile gsmartcontrol (emerge -pv sys-apps/gsmartcontrol) and the output was:

Code: Select all

Calculating dependencies ... done!
[ebuild  N  ] x11-apps/xmessage-1.0.4::gentoo  0 KiB
[ebuild  N  ] sys-apps/gsmartcontrol-0.8.7::gentoo  USE="{-test}" 0 KiB
(when I run it the first time, there where more dependencies which was successfully installed)

4- while installing the gsmartcontrol package running:

Code: Select all

emerge sys-apps/gsmartcontrol
an error occured:

Code: Select all

ERROR: x11-apps/xmessage-1.0.4::gentoo failed (configure phase):
and some more error lines.

I uploaded the config log here https://gist.github.com/alexxtasi/2f30f ... 26880644eb
(using sysrcd 4.9.0 and trying to customize it on VitrualBox)

can someone help me workaround this error so I install gsmartcontrol ?

regards

Edit:
using the same commands I manage to install mbr (https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/sys-boot/mbr) which makes me think that the steps I took are ok.

I am sure the system-rescue-cd made life so much easier for many people.

I would like to ask for the GSmartControl be included in the cd.
