Some laptops have the BIOS functionality to move a system to hibernation if it is in suspend a given time (or to low battery level). This is very good to avoid destroying data if the system is left in suspend and the battery goes empty.
lphdisk is the program that both calculate the size and format the partition of that special kind.
Alternate rpm sources http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=lphdisk
Real world usage example: http://www.firetree.net/calvino/thinkpad240x.html ; see about 1/3 down the page.
Side question: In gparted that partition type cannot be selected. Can gparted selection list be extended? (I can select between several times more systems in Mandriva diskdrake, hibernation is one of them)
Post there if an important software is missing and has to be added
