1.3.3; USB install fails (syslinux)

Post by Dilligaf » 16 Dec 2009, 01:59

CD burned, boots fine.

Went to install on a 2GB USB drive. Followed the directions on the site.
All goes well until the last step:

sysreccd-usbstick syslinux /dev/sdb1
Error converting to codepage 850 Invalid argument
Cannot initialize S:
Bad target s:/ldlinux.sys
syslinux: failed to create ldlinux.sys
syslinux failed to prepare /dev/sdb1

So, obviously, the thumb-drive won't boot.

Google didn't help much with this; others posted similar issues with the syslinux utility (not in association with sysresccd) but there was no fix posted. I thought it might be a problem with syslinux.cfg, but other than the French keymap set as default, I don't see a fix; I had also specified the US keymap as default on boot; used the default kernel.

Thoughts?
Thanks.

Hello,

I had the same problem (error converting to codepage 850).
I found a (weird) solution.
- Boot with SystemRescueCD
- do "listdev, writeMBR, format and CopyFiles"
- shutdown and boot on Windows ...
- do the "SysLinux" under windows : It works fine !!!!!!!!!!

See you soon

Hi -

Tried that yesterday. Did all of the preceding steps under Linux, then booted up an XP machine and unzipped the syslinux-3.xx.zip package, then ran both

syslinux G:

and syslinux -ma G:

Neither one came up with an error message, but it didn't create the ldlinux.sys file either, and the USB drive was still not bootable.

Thanks for the thought, though. Glad it worked for you....wonder why it didn't for me. I'm using one of the USB drives (SanDisk Cruzer 2GB) which is on their "definitely works with this" list.

I'll try it again tonight on a different machine.

Did all preceeding steps when booted on SysRescCD CD,
then Syslinux e: as Adminstrator in Vista worked for me.

Dilligaf: Did you execute it as Administrator when it failed?
