Truecrypt dropped

Postby Cellmate » 07 Jul 2014, 00:18

I am quite shocked to read that Truecrypt has been removed from SysRescCD.

How should one migrate or administer existing Truecrypt drives without having access to the tool?

(I mean, the message on the official Truecrypt website is a nasty lie and in no way justified as to my knowledge, but anyway, if you conform to the message, the tool shouldn't be dropped but upgraded to the current crippled version that doesn't allow creating new drives.)

Gentoo Dev Alon Bar-Lev dropped keywords for version 7.2 on my proposal see:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=508084

Please bring back version 7.1a!

I have built a gentoo binary package for truecrypt 7.1a using quickpkg.

See* http://ge.tt/3Qho2jq1/v/1

Use the below option to emerge it.

Code: Select all

--usepkg [ y | n ] (-k short option)
Tells  emerge  to  use  binary  packages (from $PKGDIR) if they are available, thus possibly avoiding some time-consuming compiles.  This
option is useful for CD installs; you can export PKGDIR=/mnt/cdrom/packages and then use this option to have emerge "pull"  binary  pack‐
ages from the CD in order to satisfy dependencies.

A late update to help other users:

System Rescue includes cryptsetup which lets you open and close truecrypt files:

Code: Select all

# open tc container:
cryptsetup open --type tcrypt my_image.tc tcimage
###

# mount the container:
mkdir /mnt/tcimage
mount /dev/mapper/tcimage /mnt/tcimage
###

# close the container:
cryptsetup close --type tcrypt /dev/mapper/tcimage
###

cryptsetup's truecrypt functions are limited to open and close but they let you recover your files.

See the cryptsetup man page for help.

A very useful hint. Sadly, there are truecrypt configurations that are not supported by cryptsetup.

Any reason not to re-introduce truecrypt to SysRescCD?

truecrypt has recently been audited and is considered safe and secure under most circumstances. https://opencryptoaudit.org/reports/TrueCrypt_Phase_II_NCC_OCAP_final.pdf

truecrypt is also back in the Gentoo portage tree, and is available in binary form.

If we conclude that there has been a secret order by some organisation to remove truecrypt, can SysRescCD as a whole still be considered safe? A few script lines could send accessible secrets across the net while you have it mounted...
