USB Bootable SysRescueCD changes

Postby gatorback » 02 Jul 2013, 15:45

While using a USB flash drive (NOT a CD): I would like to add packages (Firefox) as well as make other customizations: and have them be persistent (be there the next time I boot).

I'm not really sure if this is possible or the right keyword to Google this. Any comments from someone who has done this before would be helpful, confirming that this can be done. In addition, lessons-learned and references to links would be appreciated. Thank you.

Firefox on usb flash is very easy. Just copy the srm file to the usbstick.

Use autorun for small changes at startup time.

Read this to make a full custom version.

@gernot: Thank you for the response and links. As I understand it from the first link, one needs to copy the srm and md5 file to the root directory of the USB flash drive.

Very nice... Firefox shows up as a menu item.
I am also unsure if I should expect (I am guessin 'no') that there will be persistence with Firefox, in the the sense that it will remember passwords \ websites visited after a reboot. Maybe that is an new thread.

@gernot: thank you again. I created my first successful backstore. I found that when booting from the USB sysrescue, I could not write to the root directory of the UFD (USB Flash Drive) mounted at /livemnt/boot. To overcome this obstacle I:

1) booted from another sysrescue UFD
2) mounted the second sysrescued UFD to /mnt/backstore
3) executed: sysresccd-backstore create /mnt/backstore/sysrcd.bs 256

I made some small changes and verified their persistance by rebooting the UFD. (successful)

It would be very useful / convenient if it were possible to (safely) write to the root of the bootable UFD.

Again, thank you for the encouragement and guidance. I plan to teach this to my colleagues and students. :)

Without backstore make the usbstick root writable with this command:
mount /livemnt/boot -o remount,rw

With backstore an other directory (i think /livemnt/backstore) is writable by default.
