Has anybody successfully resized a NTFS partition recently

Postby ottavio » 15 Aug 2015, 14:59

I resized a NTFS partition in 2013 to make room for Netbsd and I used an old version of GParted. Everything went absolutely fine.

Recently I used a newer version of Gparted to resize a FAT32 usb disk
and it ended up in massive filesystem corruption.

I know that FAT is not NTFS, but I don't want to take any chances. I
have too much stuff on my Windows partition that unfortunately I can't
back up anywhere else.

Apparently Gparted now uses a newer version of libparted that is
causing problems.

Has anybody had any positive/negative experiences lately?

Thanks

I had such a problem some time ago and field bug reports at gparted forum.
Filesystem was Fat32 on a USB stick.
One problem is that I dont find why the filesystem is broken.
Linux worked perfect with the resized filesystem while windows ask to format the device.

Yes, I've been following that thread, G.

In your opinion what was the latest safe version of Gparted included in sysresccd?

I might as well go back and install an older version just for that purpose? Is anything from 2013 safe enough?

I think versions with libparted 3.1 are safe.
Its on sysresccd 4.2

To be sure make a backup. e.g. with partimage, fsarchiver, parlone or clonezilla.

It is a good idea to make the "shrink" step alone. I had the case that gparted exit without a message and i dont know at which step in batch. In my case it was after creating a extended partition so all was well. But i had to double check all data.
