How to rescue an unreachable folder (Input/output error)?

Post by Carapuce » 14 May 2010, 15:50

Hello,

I have an external USB HD that is damaged.
There is a folder Foto's with .jpg files that I want to recover.
Windows XP freezes when I plug the disk in, this live cd seems to handle it better.
The file manager (emelFM2) does not show the folder at all.
When trying a recursive ls I saw in the error notes (Input/output error) that there was an unaccessible Foto's folder.

I tried photorec but that didn't help.
What would be the way to go with the toolset on this CD to recover the data?

example from log:

[email protected] /mnt/usbhd % cd "Foto's"
cd: Input/output error: Foto's
[email protected] /mnt/usbhd % dmesg

Partimage (GUI version) halts allmost immediately with an error "can't read block <some big number> from image".
