GParted cannot manage FAT32 partitions with syslinux

Post by golgerUBi » 14 Dec 2009, 15:19

Using GParted on SystemRescueCD1.3.3, an unmounted FAT32 partition with SYSLINUX (on an HDD or a USB stick) is displayed with a warning sign, used and free space is not reported, and resize/move option is available (not greyed-out) but unusable.
When such a partition is mounted, the used and free space is displayed correctly, but resize/move menu is greyed out.

Using a GParted from Gparted-Live-0.4.5-3 works fine, using Gparted from Xubuntu 9.04 works fine, and GParted from Zenwalk live 6.0.1 works fine. The partitions themselves also seem to work and boot fine, and Ranish 4.43 displays them correctly.

To determine the number of used sectors, GParted uses the following command:

Code: Select all

dosfsck -v /path-to-partition
where /path-to-partition is something like /dev/sda1

If this command fails for any reason then GParted will not know how much space is used and how much is free within the file system.

Perhaps there is a problem with the version of dosfstools on SystemRescueCD-1.3.3 working with this fat32 file system?

You could try running this command in a terminal and posting the results here.

I will downgrade dosfstools in the next SystemRescueCd-1.3.4-beta version, it should fix the problem.

This problem is due to a change I made in GParted 0.4.7.

The problem was reported in GParted bug #605175 - GParted Live 0.5.0-3 & 0.4.8-7 not reading some FAT32 partitions.

The fix will be included in the next release of GParted (0.5.1).

Hence you should be able to return to a newer version of dosfstools.
