nbd_server: Read failed: Inappropriate ioctl for devi

Postby cschulzejn » 30 Aug 2011, 16:56

Hi.

We are heavily using sysresccd too boot laptops via PXE and NBD.

Some Acer Aspire netbooks wont boot, nbd doesn't get a connection.

Syslog on server:
Aug 30 15:28:45 castor nbd_server[29415]: Read failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Aug 30 15:28:45 castor nbd_server[29415]: Exiting.
Aug 30 15:28:45 castor nbd_server[5008]: Child exited with 1

the netbook just display "nbd-client cannot connect, dumping to mini-shell".

any ideas?
goolging revealed some others heaving these problems, but no solution :-(

Hi,
what sysrcd version use you?

Check the IP of the used interface.
run ifconfig to check this.
Try to run the nbd-server manual.
#> /usr/bin/nbd-server IP_of_the_used_interface:2000 /tftpboot/sysrcd.dat -r

edit: looks like you don't use sysrcd as server. Check that nbd-server match your system.

We are using sysrcd 2.3.0, server is running Debian Squeeze amd64. nbd-server 2.9.16-8, 2.6.32-5-amd64

over 5000 other machines (laptops, nettops, netbooks) were booting fine with this configuration.

I hope I'll have time in this week to update to sysrc 2.3.1 and do some more testing. Didn't have the time yet and thought "maybe some1 else alrdy had this problem" :-)

hmmm. Is it so that the server boot manny PC , but if you boot this netbook nbd-server or one nbd-server process crash?
Can you restart nbd-server and run nbd-client at the netbook?
(booted via HTML or with minishell )

May be strace -f, tcpdump or wireshark on the server show something.

nbd-server doesn't crash, other machines still boot fine from that server.

thx for your hints so far, will try that.
