No i586 kernel anymore?

According to http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/Kernel/ the kernel should still support i586.
But I noticed, starting with 5.1.0, the kernel is now compiled for i686, thus now longer working with i586 CPUs.
Also, starting with 5.0.0, PAE is enabled on i586, which makes booting on i586 impossible.

Is this a mistake or on purpose to no longer to support i586?
