SystemrescueCDx86.2.0.1 stalls after boot

Post in this forum for problems at boot time, if there was no problem for burning the disc. For example can't find the CD, or strange errors when you press enter at the very first prompt.

SystemrescueCDx86.2.0.1 stalls after boot

Post by lautrerable » 17 Mar 2011, 22:28

Hi,

Burned 2 ISO images of systemrescuecd-x86.2.0.1.
Couldn't find the sumcheck value anywhere.
Still, both copies boot and I have the inital screen displayed, but keyboard input is impossible. So they're of no use.
System is an AMD ATHLON XP1800+.

Thank you for your help.

Stall the system or is only the keybord unusable?

Look for biossetup options like USB-Keybord or USB-legacy support.

Image checksums are on this page

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply and the pointer.
The checksum is OK.
What exactly happens is that after the initial screen is displayed the count-down counter before booting starts to tick. As soon as I touch a single key the count-down freezes as well as the rest.
I need to re-boot after that.
I let the counter hit zero but the system stalled during the loading process.

You mention USB.
Would the fact that I boot from an external USB1 CD-ROM drive (PC dates from 2003 and no longer boots from its integrated CD-ROM drive) have anything to do with this ?

Cheers,

I think yes. Syslinux is not able to access USB and need support of the BIOS.
Have you tried a different distribution or boot from USB stick?

Hi,

What distribution do you suggest ?
If Syslinux cannot access USB why should it work with a USB stick ??

Thanks,

sysrcd emulates a USB-Disk. This is for the BIOS a big difference.
There are so many other live CDs . Gparted or ubuntu as example.
Your preferred distribution has probably a liveversion.

Made a bootable USB stick from the initially downloaded ISO file.
The stick was 'visited' (LED was active for a short while) at boot time but my PC booted WIN XP as usual.

looks like the BIOS is a bit problematic.
Some BIOS like it if you write a MBR to the stick ( ms-sys -s /dev/sdX ).

Last(not real last) chance to boot this PC is starting the USB sysrcd stick with a PLOP bootloaderfloppy.
