system won't boot from rescue cd - says "not enough mem

Post in this forum for problems at boot time, if there was no problem for burning the disc. For example can't find the CD, or strange errors when you press enter at the very first prompt.

system won't boot from rescue cd - says "not enough mem

Postby gmachine_24 » 26 Apr 2009, 19:55

Hi:

I have attempted to boot my computer using the Linux system rescue CD - I want to run partimage - but I can never get past an initial error that says:

Enter to boot: [enter]
Loading rescue cd ...................................................Not enough memory to load specified kernel
boot:

I tried the alternative kernels, both 32 and 64 bit, and got the same error message.

My computer is old - a PIII 950 but it has 1.5GB of RAM so I think there is enough memory....

Thanks in advance..................

I have the same problem, but only 16 MB of memory. Is there any way to boot such a low-end machine? I think there should be, since we are talking about a rescue disk.

Is that problem specific to SystemRescueCd or do you have the same problem with other Linux based LiveCds ?
Do you get the correct amount of memory detected when you boot with "memtest" ?
Can you boot with "rescuecd mem=1024" ?
I guess 16MB is not enough.

FWIW, I had to prepend 'mb', like so:

Code: Select all

rescue64 mem=1024mb

This is my first post here,

I have a computer with Asus P5QPro motherboard, it has 8GB of RAM - but when I try to boot with SystemRescueCD it says "not enough mem".

The computer is working fine with Windows 7 - 64bit Ultimate.

I am trying to rescue two hard disks which seem to have lost partition tables (they had Kubuntu on them before) - but with I am unable to boot SystemRescueCD at all - the same computer boots into Ubuntu 14.04 without issues.

I tried "rescue64 mem=8048mb" but still does not work.

Please help.
