Sysrescue 0.3.2 & boot problem

Post in this forum for problems at boot time, if there was no problem for burning the disc. For example can't find the CD, or strange errors when you press enter at the very first prompt.

Sysrescue 0.3.2 & boot problem

Post by [email protected] » 29 Mar 2007, 09:07

Hello,

i've got a computer based on a AMD K6-2 500 CPU.
I tried a sysrescue cd 0.3.2 but it freezes after the line "Freeing unused kernel memory 404k freed"

Any help we'll be welcomed.

thank you

Sysresccd-0.3 cannot boot old computers, but your K62 is supposed to be an i686, and it whould work. Can you boot version 0.2.19 ?

Sysrescue 0.219 success with K6-2 but ...

Post by [email protected] » 05 Apr 2007, 12:46

Hello,

I tried a 0.2.19 sysrescue on my based AMD k6-2 computer.
The result was a success but this version doesn't have capabilities of the 0.3.x version such as ntfs-3g and xfree.

More over ADM K6-2 is a 5 level processor not a 686.

Will it be possible to have functionalities told above with the 0.2.19 version ?
Could you give me solution ?

thank you for your answer

Cannot boot 0.3.x on VIA C3 Processor

Post by davros74 » 23 May 2007, 05:51

I have a very similar problem. 0.3.2 and 0.3.5 sysresccd discs halt for me at the same place "Freeing unused kernel memory 404k freed". (Size is slightly different but around 400K).

This is on a VIA EPIA CL-6000 Mini-ITX motherboard with a VIA C3 (Samuel 2) processor 600MHz (Family: 6 Model: 7 Stepping: 3) and 256MB RAM.

uname (booted into slackware 11):
Linux caladan 2.4.33.4 #3 Tue Dec 12 23:26:38 CST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
so it should be a i686 compatible processor, just not a very common one.

My 0.3.2 and 0.3.5 sysresccd's boot fine on my Athlon64-X2 machine, just not the Mini-ITX computer with the VIA C3 cpu.

0.2.15 and 0.2.19 boot just fine on the Mini-ITX/VIA C3 system. I tried nofb and some other options, but none had any effect.

Hope this info helps

:(

See answer below - AMD K6-2 is an i586

I know, the development is going on, but it is not a good idea to build a very smal and fast distribution only for machines with an i686 or newer.

Especialy for older machines is a system rescue necessary. And there are a lot of them as file server.

So I tryed today 2 hours before I found this issue

It would be nice to think about it

I did not choose i686 for speed reasons, it makes no sense. Just because the glibc-2.5 package requires i686 to be compiled with the options I use
