many usb disk DO NOT BOOT, only one BOOT!

Post in this forum for problems at boot time, if there was no problem for burning the disc. For example can't find the CD, or strange errors when you press enter at the very first prompt.

many usb disk DO NOT BOOT, only one BOOT!

Post by alexferro » 16 Mar 2007, 16:51

HI All!

My configuration:
notebook ASUS
SRCD v. 0.2.19
USB-DISK:
- recondata 1Gb USB2.0
- databar 2Gb USB2.0
- TwinMOS Modile Disk Z4 2Gb USB2.0
- Pen Drive 128Mb USB1.0 (this boot!!!)

I follow the simple instruction into tutorial to install SystemRescueCD on a usb-disk, but I discover that only 1 usb-disk over 4, boot well!!!

This usb-disk was detect by BIOS as a Removal Disk, while all the others was detect as USB-HDD.

I don't know why my BIOS prefer the older usb-disk??!!

I need help, thanks!

Maybe the disk geometry is wrong (have a look at similar topics in this forum)

I have also replicated PenDrive's geometry to all other USB-DISK by

fdisk -b 512 -c numcyl -h 16 -s 32 /dev/sd?

and repeat the procedure SRCD->USB disk but whitout success!!!

Any idea?

usb keys boot better on partition number 4

I had the same problem with usb keys of 1GB and 2 GB with several bios. I have found that fdisk-ing the usb key and create 1 partition as primary n°4 (sda4 or sdb4) works fine! (It is the way that zip drive was formated). The partition need to be alone and activated.

If there is still problem, try syslinux with -S option (but boot and loading of the linux image will be a lot slowler!!)
