problem on one notebook with sysresccd-usbstick dialog

Post by falk » 24 Jul 2011, 21:11

Sorry for my bad english. :-)

i have an old Asus-Notebook with a problem to create SystemRescueCds on USB-Stick.

The Notebook:

Code: Select all

[email protected] /root % cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor       : 0
vendor_id       : GenuineIntel
cpu family      : 6
model           : 15
model name      : Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual  CPU  T2370  @ 1.73GHz
stepping        : 13
cpu MHz         : 1729.000
cache size      : 1024 KB
.
.

[email protected] /root % free
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:       3074388     649620    2424768          0      43016     452672
-/+ buffers/cache:     153932    2920456
Swap:            0          0          0
not realy slow.

on this Notebook i have a usb-Stick:

Code: Select all

[email protected] /root % ls -l /dev/sdc*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 32 Jul 24 22:36 /dev/sdc
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 33 Jul 24 22:36 /dev/sdc1

[email protected] /root % fdisk -l /dev/sdc

Disk /dev/sdc: 4012 MB, 4012900352 bytes
223 heads, 55 sectors/track, 639 cylinders, total 7837696 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00013398

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1   *           1     7837695     3918847+  83  Linux
Now the Problem:

Code: Select all

[email protected] /root % sysresccd-usbstick dialog

Installation on /dev/sdc in progress

details will be written in /var/tmp/usb_inst.log
* Writing MBR on /dev/sdc
* Creating filesystem on /dev/sdc0...
.
.

Code: Select all

[email protected] /root % cat /var/tmp/usb_inst.log

Installation on /dev/sdc at 2011-07-24_23:07
The device [/dev/sdc] seems to be big enough: 3827 MB.
--> /usr/sbin/install-mbr /dev/sdc --force
--> /usr/sbin/parted -s /dev/sdc mklabel msdos
--> /usr/sbin/parted -s /dev/sdc mkpart primary 0 100%
Warning: The resulting partition is not properly aligned for best performance.
--> /usr/sbin/parted -s /dev/sdc set 1 boot on
sysresccd-usbstick: error: /dev/sdc0 is not a valid partition name
/dev/sdc0 ? ;-)

What happens?
I Made many tests with my notebook and the script.

1. The Script create a MBR on /dev/sdc.
2. With the function find_first_partition he search the first primary partition.

but

at this time /dev/sdc1 does not exists on my notebook - its create the file to slow

With a little sleep between creating MBR and search the partition:

Code: Select all

[email protected] /usr/sbin % diff -u sysresccd-usbstick sysresccd-usbstick-sleep
--- sysresccd-usbstick  2011-07-24 13:20:06.000000000 +0000

                        do_writembr ${devname2} >> ${logfile} 2>&1
                        [ $? -ne 0 ] && dialog_die "Failed to write the MBR on ${devname2}"

                        dialog_status "${status}"
it work fine.

What do you think about my problem and my idea/solution?

Thanks for your prompt response. I can't test whether your addition of "sleep 1" works. If you say it works I accept it. I'll defer making another attempt at putting srcd on a flash drive until after the other issues of the "UI" in the syslinux.cfg and the non-working GParted are fixed or addressed. To make it easy for those readers/posters who wish to try the patch/verify your results, they should insert the patch after line 462 of the script usb_inst.sh.

Seems we are the only people putting SRCD on flash drive.
