LCD turned off on Thinkpad T410 (1.6.0-beta006)

Post by PeteDaGuru » 27 Jul 2010, 12:00

SystemRescueCd-1.6.0-beta006 turns off the LCD towards the end of the boot sequence on a Thinkpad T410 ( http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T410 ). It still seems to be running fine, but can't see anything (nor turn it on via any key on the KB). It turns off before X-windows gets started, but unfortunately, the screen disappears before I can glimpse which insmod is killing it ;-). My SWAG is that there is some interaction between one of the kernel modules (perhaps not even display-related) and the nVidia display driver.

Do you have the same problem:
1) if you boot the default kernel (rescuecd / rescue64) with "nomodeset" (disable Kernel-Mode-Setting driver)
2) Is that working with the default options on the alternative kernel ?

The initial menu comes up fine, but afterwards it has troubles. All the kernels are failing in some way. With nomodeset and VGA mode, I seem to see a delay and a blink when video.ko loads (rather than the LCD shutting off), but after that get endless messages about a "DMA Error" and "context entry ffff000" that I can't stop so I can fully read ;-).
HDT gives VESA 3.0 as Nvidia Quadro NVS170M, but it is actually a Quadro 3100M ( http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/NVIDIA_Quadro_NVS_3100M ). It looks like some power-saving feature may be getting enabled.

After my last posting, I figured it may be something to do with power-savings mode for the graphics chip. I tried "acpi=off", which causes a heckuva long delay while "Loading Modules..." is displayed, but eventually gets me towards a visible system (I even can startx). In this case it looks like the nouveau module takes a long time to finish (the open-source nVidia driver), so I suspect that there is some funniness going on there (error in log is "nouveau: Unknown symbol acpi_video_get_edid", but it does load).
Using "noload=nouveau" gets rid of the long delay, but ends up with the DMA error message loop.

The "nouveau" kernel and xorg drivers have been removed from recent sysresccd-1.6.0-beta releases because it was not working properly. The old xf86-video-nv driver will be used instead. Is that better ?
