SysRescueCd-2.7.1: can't burn image into usb stick [solved]

Postby Infra3600 » 28 May 2012, 08:14

Hi, everybody! Can anybody help me?

I am trying to update my instrumental flash drive following instruction http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manu ... from_Linux

Previuos several updates, including 2.7.0, was ended OK.
But 2.7.1 stopped with errors:
┌──────────────────────────────Error─────────────────────────────────┐
│ Failed to install the boot loader /dev/sdc1 │
│ Read the logfile (/var/tmp/usb_inst.log) for more details │

Logfile tail is
«./usb_inst.sh» -> «/mnt/usbstick/usb_inst.sh»
«./usbstick.htm» -> «/mnt/usbstick/usbstick.htm»
«./version» -> «/mnt/usbstick/version»
Files have been successfully copied to /dev/sdc1
/var/tmp/usb_inst.tmp/syslinux: no previous syslinux boot sector found
syslinux failed to prepare /dev/sdc1

After this, I have been successfully rollbacked my flash back to 2.7.0
Your suggestions? :)

Re: SystemRescueCd-x86-2.7.1: can not burn image into usb st

Yust made a test: Boot sysresccd 2.7.1. and run "sysresccd-usbstick dialog" with a clean stick.
It worked well.
usb_inst.sh has a small problem with the changed userinterface of syslinux 4.x

You can try "./usb_inst/syslinux --install --directory syslinux /dev/sdc1" after you got the error message.
This should make the stick bootable again.
Make sure to prepare the right device.

Gernot

p.s. unmount /dev/sdc1 because the error avoid the automatic unmount.

Many thanks for the bug reports and for the fix. Everything should be fixed:
The usb_inst.sh script has been fixed in beta2 and a new sysresccd-installer-1.2.0.exe has been released.

Re: SysRescueCd-2.7.1: can't burn image ... Need Help!

Postby caspertone2003 » 10 Jun 2012, 02:26

Hello!
I am trying to burn the usb using the windows exe, sysresccd-installer-1.2.0.exe
But it fails at the very end with a:
"Failed to execute syslinux --install --directory syslinux H:"

I tried the following way:
a) looked into usb_inst. No exe there (only a syslinux no extension)
b) copied to usb_inst the syslinux.exe that is in directory bootprog, syslinux-4.05.zip (I took the win32 one).
c) open CMD, changed to usb_inst dir
d) run "syslinux --install --directory syslinux H:"
failed with "non correct parameter"

Any hint of what to do?

TIA

I suspect you may have an old version of syslinux installed somewhere on your system. You don't have to copy syslinux before you run the installer, as it will extract its own version in a temp directory. So please just do a search for all syslinux files on your system, remove these files, and try again.

Thank you for your kind and kick response!
I had already done that (I found the sysresccd syslinux.exe under local configuration\temp ...), so in fact I downloaded last version of syslinux.exe to the usb and named it syslinux-4-05.exe to avoid such kind of problems - so I found that sysresccd usb installer failed as syslinux.exe failed ...

So, I will try to find ansers in the syslinux forums ... If/When I get an answer, I will report here ...

Thanks again,
CT
