Booting GAG/MHDD/etc. images from USB

Postby ardichoke » 12 Dec 2011, 20:43

I followed the instructions here to install SysRescueCD to a small partition on a USB drive. I managed to adapt the menu.lst there so that it would work with Grub2, however, I can't get any of the tools that use memdisk to load. Currently, I have them configured as follows:

Code: Select all

menuentry 'Gag' {
        set root='(hd0,1)'
        linux /isolinux/memdisk
        initrd  /bootdisk/gag.img
}

When booting one of these options, my system just reboots. Does anyone know how to properly boot these tools using Grub2?

I miss the "floppy" keyword after the kernelname like it's on the append line in syslinux.cfg:

Code: Select all

menuentry 'Gag' {
        set root='(hd0,1)'
        linux /isolinux/memdisk floppy
        initrd  /bootdisk/gag.img
}

I just got around to testing this. What you posted did not work either. My test boxes all simply rebooted when configured as you posted above.

I also tried the following, which is closer to the syslinux boot config. It did not work either:

Code: Select all

menuentry "Gag" {
        linux   /isolinux/memdisk initrd=/bootdisk/gag.img floppy
}

(note, I revised my grub.cfg to set the root outside of the individual menuentry blocks, because it's simpler).

is linux bootable?
If yes, check the path of memdisk and the bootdisks .Grub must load both.

There is a new usb-installer for FAT32.
If you dont want FAT its possible to use extlinux with the orginal configuration file.

Yes, Linux is bootable. I can also boot any of the non memdisk tools (i.e. - memtest). It's only the memdisk tools that don't work.

And yes, the paths are correct in my config.

This code work. Linux is wrong, kernel right.

Code: Select all

menuentry 'Gag' {
        set root='(hd0,1)'
        kernel /isolinux/memdisk
        initrd  /bootdisk/gag.img
}

There is no "kernel" command in grub2. Memdisk tools should be loaded with linux16 like this:

Code: Select all

menuentry 'Gag' {
        set root='(hd0,1)'
        linux16  /isolinux/memdisk floppy
        initrd16 /bootdisk/gag.img
}

I can confirm that this works, with the latest SysRescCD at least. I can also confirm that I am terrible at checking forums.
