Re: No graphical environment in Hyper-V

Gernot, As the screenshot shows, I did boot to the default text mode first and to the framebuffer mode. Then at the prompt I typed startx, but the same problem occurred. Otherwise, I am not understanding what you mean exactly by this statement: "Enter then wizard at the shell prompt." Plea...

Re: No graphical environment in Hyper-V

Gernot, hello. If I am not mistaken, by "wizard" you mean the initial display listing of several menu options for booting. I used it too, trying all of these options that seemed reasonable in this case. For example, I tried the one for booting "directly into a graphical environment.&q...

No graphical environment in Hyper-V

I cannot get startx to run when I have booted "systemrescuecd-x8605.1.2.iso" as an image file on a virtual CD/DVD in a virtual machine with Hyper-V role running on Windows Server 2012 R2, although the nongraphical environment runs in the VM. The graphical environment runs fine when I burn ...

Re: Problems with creating USB from Windows

> "USB installation failed with status-2102: Cannot rename \isolinux to \syslinux" I had this problem too for a minute. However, it can be fixed easily if you add a step to the online instructions. Once you have selected the Original ISO file and the USB stick for installing, then you must...

Flash Drive Recovery

I want to say that I was extremely fortunate that I had a copy of SystemRescueCD from which to boot so that I could use TestDisk to recover the hosed NTFS partition on an SD card. It worked like a charm, for real. I just followed the online instructions you provided here, and it worked perfectly, ju...

Internet Connection Sharing

If this is discussed here, kindly provide a link and accept my humble apology for not finding it before asking. It would be swell if there were a quick way, say, while booting into the live CD, to have it set up for internect connection sharing (that's what it's called in Windows!) between two avail...

Re: Gentoo installation fails in Virtualbox

Okay, my bad. I worked this out and got Gentoo installed properly. I believe it was failing because I had allowed for too small of a hard disk during installation of the system.

Gentoo installation fails in Virtualbox [solved]

Using the latest version of all these softwares in question, I have no luck installing Gentoo x64 in Virtualbox on a Windows host while following the directions for alternate CD (i.e., the SystemRescueCD) instead of using Gentoo's minimalCD ISO. Everything appears to proceed fine until the final poi...

Root Disk Image

The instruction for SystemRescueCd states that it can be customized. One of the ways I was considering using it along such lines is in connection with the Linux hypervisor "lguest". Specifically, as the lguest program requires that we "create or find a root disk image", which in ...

Partitioning the sysrescd USB boot device

I may have overlooked it, but I did not see anything mentioned about whether a bootable USB installation of SystemResceCd would require that the whole USB device be used exclusively by the program. Is there any reason why we cannot make a small partition on a USB drive and put the bootable OS in the...

How to mount VirtualBox VDI image with sysrescd and QEMU

After some trial and error and a bit of research, I was able to figure out how to mount VirtualBox VDI images from a remote machine on the LAN so long as that remote machine is running QEMU, even without VirtualBox on it. It does not need to have VirtualBox, but it does need sshfs and kpartx, which ...

Re: Mounting images of virtual drives [solved]

> "...attach the sysresccd iso to the virtual machine ..." This is a powerful technique and is working quite well for me. It works for many different image formats used by various hypervisors. Generally speaking, I have found the VDI images of VirtualBox to be the least accessible of such ...

Screen size matters on functionality of Qemu guest

This does not seem to me to be an especially significant or problematic issue, but I wanted to mention it regardless. Moreover, so far as I have seen, it appears only with a guest VM on the KVM/Qemu hypervisor. I have not seen it occur with other hypervisor systems even though I have used it with ot...

security considerations

Since I can use SystemRescueCD to access directories of VMs and regular systems by mounting their drives whiel booting into the sysresc OS, I was wondering whether there would be a way to alert me in the event of any other connection being made to the OS while I was working in it. In other words, if...

Re: Mounting images of virtual drives [solved]

Hi, gernot. I was so happy to get your main point about vdfuse, that I totally overlooked what came after it. However, I just now noticed the relevance of your postscript: "You can boot sysresccd on the virtual machine." Actually, I think this may be a superior suggestion, especially under...
