Re: Setting the timezone

There may be a better way (kernel boot option?), but if you set up persistence with a backing store you can then create and link to your heart's content:

sorting scrambled /dev/sdN's

I currently use the following procedure to help figure out which disks are which - most of my servers have many disks with identical partitioning. Say I'm in SysRescCD - I create files in a parallel locations on each drive with a name like "sda1-srcd" "sdb1-srcd" etc. Then when I'm in Grml, if I not...

well *I* think it's a bug

First of all, SRCD's an *excellent* sysadmin tool, not just for rescue/recovery but also routine maintenance for servers whose production OSs are running outdated toolsets that can't be upgraded in situ. Thanks so much for all your hard work on this!! And I'm probably not qualified to bring this up,...

Re: Problems booting with backing store

or (for us noobs) put that into "autorun" in /root, right?

I've done a bit more testing about the mdadm auto-assembly, but will start a new thread

Re: Problems booting with backing store

Thanks very much for these details. I certainly didn't *intentionally* do anything with inittab. Looks like I inadvertently filled up my backstore's disk space? How is that condition supposed to be handled - any warning to the user? I think what I'll do is manually set up my customizations in an ove...

Re: Problems booting with backing store

Thanks Gernot, but it will take some research for this noob to be able to follow some of your points. For others googling later, I found a good howto on loop mounting in general: http://www.walkernews.net/2007/07/01/create-linux-loopback-file-system-on-disk-file/ will now also check out the "mount -...

Problems booting with backing store

I've been booting from ISO with a backing store no problems, but have just started having boot failures: inittab complains "duplicate ID field "c1" (then c2 c3 etc) then "INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/agetty" and Id "c1 (etc)" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes I've gone back to booting from ...

Re: Please stop messing with my /dev/md devices, and ISO-boo

Thanks Gernot, I'm a complete noob regarding the init, and would prefer to stay that way for the moment :) From a noob's POV, the way GRML handles it seems ideal to me. With SRCD, the nomdadm + backing store with mdadm.conf seem to work fine to keep the md#s in order. I believe I was mistaken about ...

Please stop messing with my /dev/md devices, and ISO-booting

I'm trying to use the loopback-boot-from-ISO method here, so parts of this might be an outlying use case, but I think my problems do points up issues that affect others using mdadm (Linux "pure software) raid as well. And I admit up front that this post mixes up a few different issues, but IMO it wo...

Re: request add Super GRUB Disk.

The GRUB 2 version's been updated - v1.98s1 Note it doesn't help *fix* any GRUB2 problems (update your HDD), but it's got the ability to search all your HDDs and give you a list of target boots by configfile, MBR, directly to kernels, etc. Ubuntu's LiveCD's a great tool to actually fix things, but y...

Recommend/request adding to SR CD - Boot Info Script

(Sorry I originally posted this to the wrong place) IMHO this very cool little tool would be a valuable addition to the distro's booting collection: http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ It collects what seems to be all possible information, the output of dozens of commands run against all your blo...
