Is partimage dependable for partition level backup/restore?

It's been a while now but there was a time when I found partimage to be a very useful tool. It looks like it has been stabilized for some time now. That could be either good or bad depending on the situation. Something I've used it for previously and have a new found interest in is backup and restor...

Re: Drive not recognized by System Rescue CD (SYSRECCD)

For anybody else who cares the solution to my problem is explained here. For a complete lesson on related matters a pretty thorough tutorial can be found here.

Note: The referenced material is specific to Dell computers but it is conceivable that other brands might suffer from similar issues.

Drive not recognized by System Rescue CD (SYSRECCD)

A new Dell Inspiron 3670 computer has 2 drives factory installed. One is a conventional hard drive (HD) the other is a solid state drive (SSD). Now that I can boot the SYSRECCD (refer to this topic for more about that), when I open GParted the SSD is nowhere to be found. The, missing, SSD is connect...

Re: USB stick won't boot

Curiously, I changed a BIOS (UEFI type) setting called General>Advanced Boor Option>Enable Legacy Option to ON for an unrelated reason. However, after that the startx command did successfully launch the GUI. I can't explain why. It certainly doesn't jump out as something that would have such effect....

Re: USB stick won't boot

Well now I became a bit impatient and went ahead and tried one of the other methods for installing it on a boot-able USB device. As a result I no longer have the failing device which means I can't meaning fully check grub.cfg. However, when checking the CD, that seems to work fine, I notice that the...

USB stick won't boot

This is about version 5.3.2 of System Rescue CD. I downloaded the ISO and burned the CD. Even though I haven't yet done much of anything with it the CD boots up normally. Then I followed the procedure described here for making a USB drive by using Method D which is done using the booted CD. That pro...

How to measure storage consumption?

I'm using SystemRescueCD to troubleshoot a Windows (NTFS) file system and I'd like to know if there is a way to determine the amount of file system storage that is consumed by all of the files contained in a directory to include all sub-directories contained therein?

Re: Cannot use restored NTFS partition on Windows 7

Peter, clearly we're wrestling with the same bear. Alignment is something, I must admit, I've never had to worry about but I have recently read some things somewhere which make it sound like it matters. It looks like I should plan to learn a bit about it. However, I'm pretty sure that the new partit...

Re: Cannot use restored NTFS partition on Windows 7

Thanks to Peter I looked into "ntfsclone". Found a man page at http://linux.die.net/man/8/ntfsclone , which, when discussing Windows Cloning, contains an interesting warning as follows: "Usually, Windows will not be able to boot, unless you copy, move or restore NTFS to the same partition which star...

Cannot use restored NTFS partition on Windows 7

I used GParted with the System Rescue CD 3.8.1 to reallocate the space on the hard drive of a newly acquired laptop that runs on Windows 7 (W7). The objective was to create smaller partitions for running W7 in order to set up for multiboot operation. The partition alterations seemed to work fine. I ...

CIFS mount does not work as documented

The documentation for System Rescue CD found at http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_Network#Access_a_Share_on_a_Windows_computer_with_CIFS does not work. The lfs (large file support) option, which the documentation says not to forget, is not found on the man page (mount.cifs) on my Version ...

Gparted won't start on some computers

SystemRescueCD (1.5.8) boots fine and the wizard starts the GUI/X11 environment. However, when Gparted is launched it briefly displays and then closes immediately. It behaves as if some kind of error is encountered that prevents it from running.

Any ideas?
