Re: Quick question about dd/ddrescue + ntfs-3g

ntfs-3g ist stable. of course, i you have VERY IMPORTANT data on the ntfs-target-disk a backup of it is mandatory. you could defragment and disk-check it before (in windoze). personally, i'd do it the way you describe it - it's just a regular file-creation. i have a hd-mediaplayer (which is a linux-...

kernel-imgs have different names

i think the bootimage is not called linux.
press the F*-keys to read the help-msgs before actually booting, there the names are stated.
alternatively, you just hit enter without typing anything, this will boot default-<everything> which works in most cases.
GOOD LUCK!

i suggest after restoring ntfs you always run fsck.windoze ("chkdsk") and maybe defragment the partition. if it's still not rigth after this you should check the partition sizes and if it's still not correct after that run badblocks or sth. like that (careful, this can destroy data)

you can format the disk(s) and copy the files by just booting the installed linux. create the filesystems (and directories), mount them somewhere, copy everything over, adjust /etc/fstab, done. if you change the root-device make sure to adjust the NEW /etc/fstab and the root= in grub.conf. reinstall...

how about man partimage or partimage --help  some quick hints: the drive/partition you want to restore must not be mounted when using partimage (it does not write on the filesystem, it writes on the device directly) the imagefile you want to use must be accessible somewhere, ie the filesystem/...

if you partitioned it under windoze it's likely that the second partition (windoze D:\) is on the second drive (just guessing). to see the partitions on the frist drive just run the command cfdisk /dev/sda and for the second disk cfdisk /dev/sdb if you roughly know the sizes you can identify them. G...

the only graphical fe i know of is kde's klamav, but i'm certain it's hard to get it to run on sysresccd. I hate typing all the arguments needed by clamav to move the files in a quarantine folder, save the report, make a beep etc. why don't you save them in a shellscript you burn on the cd/dvd? you ...

with partimage it's not possible to backup whole disks, i think (though maybe it was some ages ago). if you copy the whole disk (/dev/sda and not /dev/sdaX) you don't need any extra extra partition info. be aware that there might be some extra steps involved if you want to write the resulting image ...
